O'Connell Day Five - Final Touches!

Day Five
On Day 5, the group wrapped up their history exploration project. A few of Mrs. O'Connell's students still had to finish their drawings for the IMovie. When the drawings were finished, Nate scanned in the pictures. Then, everyone worked together to choose background music for the movie. The kids eventually decided to use the song "Loca" by Shakira. Now, they've finished their movie, and soon we'll all be able to see it and learn about exploration!

Papadakes's Class Final Script!

Here is the final script of the play:

Raevyn (not a reporter, just a student): (looks at “that was easy” button) Hmm. I wonder what this does. (presses button. “that was easy”)…. whoa cool. (all of a sudden transports). What just happened…. (looks around and sees Anthony bent over in pain)… Woah, who are you? And why do you look so hurt?

Anthony: Well I’m Anthony. And I have scurvy.

Raevyn: Scurvy? What’s that?

Anthony: Well, scurvy is a disease you get when you don’t have any Vitamin C. And I was a shipmate on Magellan’s boat when he went on his voyage around the world. We had no fruits or vegetables on board, so I got scurvy. Now my gums are rotting and my teeth are falling out!

Raevyn: Wow that’s terrible! Sounds like there was some crazy stuff that happened on that boat!(cut to pictures of ships, and Ben and Skylar voice over about the ships??)

There were a total of 5 ships consisting of Magellan himself as captain and around 250 crewman and sailors . Over the course of the trip, many of his men died of starvation and had the disease scurvy. Magellan himself was killed by natives at one point, but his crew continued their quest for spices. They eventually reached India and they obtained cinnamon and clovers. Only one ship made it back to Spain and 18 men survived the 3 year round-world trip.

(cut to bradyn and Carter)

Carter: Spices were a very important part of Magellan’s journey. One of his ships brought home a cargo full of pepper and cinnamon.

(confetti falling on them): THAT’S A LOT OF SPICES!!!

Britney: Magellan also used salt to preserve his meats on the ship, so that they wouldn’t spoil.

(cut to Britney): speaking of food, Magellan and his crew had to eat a lot of bad things, like biscuits with worms in them, leather, and dead rats. (a bunch of dead rats fall from the sky)

Bradyn: But one time, when Magellan landed on the Phillipines, something bad happened

Carter: Magellan got involved in a local political dispute, and he was killed by natives. (killing scene)

Raevyn: wow! a lot of crazy things happened on Magellan’s ship! wait…. what’s that? (presses another button and transports back)… woah.. that was weird. (walks away)

Papadakes's Class Day 5- More Decorating

On the fifth day, the group distributed props to the kids, such as white t-shirts, fake blood, face paint, and hats attached to the headbands and the kids had prepared shredded construction paper to represent spices. Before they started filming the kids played with the swords. Raevyn face-painted the kids and skyler made a boat, John taped the day.

Papadakes's Class Day 4- More Props!

The fourth day was spent making more props (cardboard swords) and documenting and videotaping their project.  Mrs. Papadakes’s kids worked hard decorating and coloring props. They also tried on the props, such as the hats. The group played with the cardboard swords and measured their heads to make headbands for the play. The girls (Braydn, Skyler, Britney) decorated the swords with glitter and the boys (Carter, Anthony, and Ben) made their own weapons for Ross to cut out from cardboard. Finally, the kids painted their swords gold and laid them out to dry.

O'Connell Day Four - IMovie Pictures!

Day Four
Day 4 was a work day, which meant everyone had to find pictures that were related to their IMovie. The day started off slowly, but everyone overcame distractions to find good images to use in the project. Katie worked on drawing Aztecs for her part of the project. Nikhil helped Keller find a map of Spain. Evren found a picture really quickly, so he looked for and found four more additional images, and Peter immediately found a picture of the Incas. Jordan used the window to trace a picture of corn, and Lauren drew a picture of a ship. Even though sometimes finding pictures didn't seem as fun as doing other things, it was a productive day and a big step towards finishing the IMovie. The group also worked on everyone's voiceovers. They had to practice how to pronounce some of the words on the scripts, and made sure everyone could annunciate while recording the voiceovers!

Papadakes' Class Day Three - Props!

Day Three
Day Three was spent making props for the skits! They cut strips of cardboard and drew swords on them. Then, they started to cut the swords out, and decorate them. They also made daggers and arrows and decorated those. Lastly they made hats for the kids. The main materials that they used were glitter, gold paint, scissors, paintbrushes, feathers, glue, and markers.

O'Connell Day Three - Voiceover Preparations

Day Three
Mrs. O'Connell's group spent the day collecting information about their topics so they could write their voiceovers for the IMovie. The voiceovers included information about Christopher Columbus and his exploration, the crops and livestock both in Europe and the Americas, and other information. Mrs. Wainright's students prepared the itinerary for day four, a work day, and helped prepare voiceover scripts.

Stanley Day Three - Scene Descriptions

Day Three:

For day 3, Cody,Joshua, Will, Mary Kelly, and Cooper worked on the
script fore the play. They lengthened it and improved the dialogue and
story line. So far they have out together 3 different scenes. These
include Frankie asking queen Mary Kelly and King Cooper to fund his
trip to the spice islands, the crew and Columbus hoping aboard their
ships, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, and finally when they
landed on the New World coast and found natives living there. Columbus
made four trips and captured natives and made them slaves. Thats all
for now!

Papadakes' Class Day Two - Script Preview

Day Two
On the second day, the group made parts of the script…Here is a little sample of how the play will go!

1. Reporter (Raevyn) finds teleporter
2. Reporter teleports to the past in front of green screen
(ocean)
3. Finds Anthony- bent over, really sick, has scurvey
4. Anthony talks about scurvy and then says,”there’s a lot
of crazy stuff that happens on these ships.”
5. Cuts to picture/model of a ship. Ben and Skylar voice
over about what happens on ships. multiple pictures
6. Bradyn talks about spices, (with Carter?)
7. Britney talks about the foods they ate, etc.
8. Cater- Magellan’s voyage to Philippines, where he
encounters indigenous people, and he gets killed
9. Reporter goes back into teleporter and goes back to
present time

Also, they started making props. The group starting cutting out swords from cardboard, planned out what materials they would need for the play (glitter, paint, scissors, paintbrushes, feathers, glue, and markers), they also decorated the swords, daggers, and arrows. They also made hats for the kids with images from computers.

O'Connell Day Two - Research

Day 2:
Day 2 was spent deciding which 3rd graders would be in charge of researching different parts of the project. Keller will research Spain, use Google to find pictures, and do a voicever with information. Lauren will research and do a voiceover for the information about Christopher Columbus, and she will also draw a picture. Evren will research the geography of America, Jordan will research foods/crops/livestock in Americas, Katie will research the Aztecs, and Peter will research the Incas. All the information gathered will work to create their IMovie!

Stanley Day Two- Information and Scripts

Day Two

For day 2, Maggie, Katie, Blaise, Piper, Catherine and Frankie did

research about the specifics of Columbus' journey and the background
info about the people he met, and the process in which he got to the
new world. Then the entire group all started work on the script for scenes 1-3 of
the play!

Stanley Day One - The Journey of Columbus

Day 1
For day 1 Joshua, Cody, Will, Mary Kelly, and Cooper met their
group of 3rd Graders from Ms. Stanley's Class: Maggie, Catherine, Blaise, Piper, Frankie, and Katie. They chose to do a play about Christopher Columbus from when
he leaves spain, throughout  his journey to the new world, and to the when
he pulls up on the New Worlds shore. In their group, Frankie is
Columbus, Cooper is King Ferdinand, Mary Kelly is Queen Ferdinand,
Maggie, Katie, Blaise, Piper, and Catherine are the native and the
crew members.

Papadakes' Class Day One - Asian Markets and Magellan

Day One:
On day one, Mrs. Papadakes’s learned about the spice
trade. They also talked about routes to the Asian markets and
Magellan. The kids learned how on Magellan’s journey around
the world, as the first man to circumnavigate the world,
the crew used spices to preserve their meat, and
eventually resorted to eating rats when their rations wore out.
In the end, even though there were lots of profits, only one ship
made it back, with out Magellan! Lots of men got the disease scurvy and some
ships even turned around because the journey was just too hard. Magellan was killed by Pacific Island Natives, yet his crew kept on making it all the way back to Europe.

The group decided to make a slideshow with the kids for
a presentation/play. Each child would talk about one subject
and represent one person having to do with the journey.
Anthony would be a ship mate talking about Scurvy, Carter
would represent Magellan and talk about spices with Bradyn(a
ship mate), Skyler and Ben would be ship mates talking about
changing the ships, and finally, Britney would talk about the
available food on the ship and what her and her fellow ship
mates ate.

In the play, there will be a green screen and Raevyn will be
the reporter who teleports back into the past and finds Anthony
who has a horrible case of scurvy. Raevyn and Anthony will
then talk to Skyler and Ben about what happens on the ship.
Then they’ll talk to Carter and Braydn about the spices and
finally Britney about the food. They all kill Carter (Magellan) in
the end of the play and will use ketchup as fake blood. The
crew and Raevyn finish the voyage home and Ross ends it by
saying “it’s all good!”. Raevyn, Ross, Nathan, and John are the
high schoolers responsible for the group, the roles that Ross,
Nathan and John will play, however, haven’t been figured out
yet.

O'Connell Day One - Early Americans; Columbus, and Pilgrims

Day 1:
In Mrs. O'Connell's 3rd grade class, students Keller, Lauren, Jordan, Katie, Evren, and Peter began to work with 10th graders Aisha, Courtney, Nikhil, Nate, and Kirt on their history projects. The students asked to do their project on who was in the Americas back then and what the Americas were like. They learned about Native Americans who lived in the Americas first, as well as about explorations from France, Spain, Asia, and Turkey. They also focused on Christopher Columbus and the Pilgrims.

They also decided that, to present what they learned, they wanted to make an IMovie about Spain, Native Americans and America, and Christopher Columbus.

Welcome to our Exploration!

Over the next couple of days, our team will be following 3 high school groups of students from Mrs. Wainright's class as they interact with children in the Lower School! The goal is to teach them about exploration through this quick student-based project here at The Kinkaid School. We hope by following our blog you learn a thing or two about exploration history you didn't know before!
